Coleman was from Lancashire and born in the town of Blackpool. She attended Arnold School in Blackpool. She was a headgirl and earned straight A grades for her A Levels. In response to questions about her Emmerdale role, she said that she regrets having not had an experience like the traditional one at university. Coleman, while still in high school, was a student of a theatre group called In Yer Space. They performed the play Crystal Clear for the Edinburgh Festival. Her performance was rewarded, and the play received positive reviews. Coleman was given the part as Jasmine Thomas at Emmerdale while auditioning in drama schools in 2005. Coleman was nominated twice for prizes in 2007. In 2007 Coleman was nominated to win two awards: The British Soap Awards as the Best Newcomer, and the National Television Awards as the Most Popular. In 2009, she was awarded nominations in two categories including Best Actress-Sexiest Female as well as Best Dramatic Performance. Coleman was nominated for Best Actress by the TV Choice Awards. Steven Moffat of Doctor Who announced in a news meeting held on the 21st March 2012 that Coleman will take over the role of Karen Gillan after she and Arthur Darvill had left. Moffat picked her for the role due to her ability to work together with Smith as well as the fact that she could speak faster than him. In fact, the role of the character Dr. Maria Santos in All My Children landed its 2 Daytime Emmy nominations. This gave her an opportunity to showcase her music creativity.
